1) Where did Gandhi famously march to? Why?

Gandhi famously marched to Dandi, India to gather salt.

2) What law was Gandhi openly defining?

Gandhi was openly defining the British Salt Law.

3) Why were 100,000 people sent to jail?

100,00 people were sent to jail because they were making salt illegally.

4) Who did India want independence from? Explain what imperialism is in your own words.

India wanted independence from Britain. Imperialism is expanding a countries power and resources.

5) What is ahimsa? Explain why Gandhi was an advocate for ahimsa?

Ahimsa is non-violence or absence of the desire to kill or harm. It’s a way of living and thinking. Gandhi was an advocate for ahimsa because he wasn’t against it.

6) List 4 religions that Gandhi ‘practiced’ or supported? Why do you think Gandhi speaking positively about so many religions was good for his campaign and popularity?

4 religions that Gandhi practiced or supported are Jainism, Buddhism, Ahimsa and Hinduism. Gandhi spoke positively about so many religions would of made him popular because him practicing those religions means he understands that religion and supports it. People respect that.

7) Complete the following sentence; “the spirit of non-violence sprang from…..” What do you think this means?

The spirit of non-violence sprang from an inner realization of spiritual unity in himself. I think this means that he isn’t violence because he finally understands what he is supposed to be doing.

8) What is Satyagraha? What were its two goals?
(If you have to look this up elsewhere to ensure it makes sense for you- please do that.)

Satyagraha is soul force, or the power with truth. Two goals were non- cooperation with evil and consisted of pulling out all support for an unjust system.

9) When did India become independent?

Indian became independent in 1947.

10) What happened on the eve of India’s independence?

On the eve of India’s independence riots erupted all over India, it was a bloodbath.

11) Do you think what Gandhi did was honorable and just? Do you think he could have accomplished the same or better by working through violence?

I think what Gandhi did was honorable, he honestly would have accomplished the same through violence. They would have been suffering either way. Gandhi was basically taking the high road.

12) What movement in the U.S.A. was inspired by Gandhi’s work?

The movement that was inspired was the civil rights movement of Martin Luther King, Jr.

13) Do some additional research, How long did Gandhi fast for? Why did he fast? What did it accomplish?

Gandhi fasted many times a three-week fast in the autumn of 1924,

a six-day fast in September 1932 and on May 8, 1933 Gandhi began a 21-day fast. He fasted for self-purification.

14) Do some additional research, What happened to Gandhi? How did he die?

Gandhi was assassinated; the bullets from a pistol were shot into his chest.
