Papa’s Waltz (Poetry Citation Assignment)

Poetry Citation

In “My Papa’s Waltz” Theodore Roethke expresses many forms of figurative language to give a better understanding of the poem for the reader. One example of imagery can be found in “ but I hung on like death:”(3). This excerpt is an over exaggeration of how hard the child hung on to his father. In “My Papa’s Waltz” Roethke expresses many different forms of figurative language to give a better understanding of the poem for the reader. Another example of imagery can be found in ‘’Then waltzed me off to bed / Still clinging to your shirt”(15-16). This excerpt gives me the image that the dad was trying to get the child to bed and it looked like he was dancing. Roethke does an excellent job of evoking the tone that he is creating. It is negative and depressing, but also surprises the reader because this poem can be read having many different tones.
