Chapter 1
1.What does the main character uncover about her brother that causes her to state, “I’m smiling, because for a moment I love my brother again” (pg. 3)?
Aside from the obvious- what does her discovery infer about her brother?

Her discovery that her brother cuts means that they are exactly the same, they both go through pain and are struggling.

2. Why do you think Rune Michaels uses the example of earthquakes to describe the aftermath of a brother-sister fight?

Rune Michaels uses the example of earthquakes to describe the aftermath of a brother-sister fight because they both cause lots of damage.

3. The main character states, “I’m broken. But nobody’s trying to fix me.” …
(Explain)

When the main character states this because she isn’t getting any help from anyone.

4. Why do you think it could be a bad idea to stay in a house that obviously has history for Brian and the main character?

It could be a bad idea to stay in a house that has history for Brian and the main character because someone could get seriously injured.

5. Why do you think Michaels leaves out the main characters real name, when she easily could have introduced it within the conversation between Aunt Phoebe and Mrs. Foster?

I think that Michaels leaves out the main characters real name because she wants you to feel the emotion that the character is feeling.

Chapter 2

1.Why is the following quotation significant to what we are learning about the main character, “They’re real people- they have trains to catch, taxis to hunt down, places to be, things to do. They leave tips… (pg. 13)

The following quotation is significant to what we are learning because the main character feels like she isn’t like a real person. She doesn’t have things to do and places to be.

2. Prediction: How do you think the main character knows the stranger in the coffee shop? Did she overreact? What do you think she is afraid of?

I do not think she knows the stranger in the coffee shop. No she didn’t overreact. I think she is afraid that he may be a creep or a stalker.

Chapter 3
1.What do you think could have stood out to the main character when she overheard the conversation between the mom and child? Specifically the line that says; “Maybe they like being nice and not hurting people, honey. You know, like we do.”

I think the fact that the mom said, “ like we do” would of stood out to her. She thinks that people judge, so how would like say that they are nice. When she thinks they aren’t.

2. Why do you think she feels safe with the elephants close by?

I think that she feels safe with the elephants close by because an elephant is a huge animal. It will keep her safe. And the elephant will notice if anything is going happen, or anyone will hurt her.
Chapter 4

1.How can she feel more at home in foreign place?

She says she misses her needles back come. And her books, she wants to use them. But she doesn’t.

2. Why do you think there is such specific focus to the elephants?

The elephants are in the cage beside her, she feels bonded with them.  The elephants could be a memory that she has with her parents.

Chapter 5

1. When Leia finds out that Tina is being hurt she exudes more passion than we are used to seeing with her character, why is this?

Leia can relate to Tina because they have being hurt in common, so Leia has more passion towards Tina.
2. Why is the bond that Leia has with Tina, becoming so real and important to her?

Tina needs to be fixed because she is broken, and Leia needs to be fixed and heeled as well. She wants them to help each other.

Chapter 6

1.Why does Leia seem so embarrassed at the thought of liking Kyle?

Leia seems embarrassed at the thought of liking Kyle

2. Why is the bond between the monkey and Leia so real for her?

The bond between the monkey and Leia is so real because they are both broken and hurt.
Chapter 7

1. Why is Brian so quick to bring Leia needles; when he isn’t the type to do things for her? Brian is so quick to bring Leia needles because he wants to be close to her.

2. What are 2 symbols you think could represent the major themes or ideas in the novel?

2 symbols that could represent major themes would be. Scars which show pain and how someone deals with it.

Chapter 8/9:
1.What is the explanation behind Leia’s plotting to kill someone? Do you think she is serious?

The explanation behind Leia’s plotting to kill someone is that she is worried about the guy she met in the café; I think that she is serious but she is unsure of what she wants to do.

2. Prediction: Why do you think Leia was keeping the item and hiding it from her brother?

I think that Leia was keeping the item and hiding it from her brother because it’s personal and it helped her remember, to cope.

3. What themes do you think are starting to become consistent within the novel?
Chapter 10

1. Why do you think Brian and Leia erased all memory of their parents? By destroying all the items do you think it helps with forgetting?

Brian and Leai erased all memories of their parents so that they can forget the past and move on, destroying the items doesn’t completely make them forget, but it helps them not always remember them.

Chapter 11

1. Explain how you think Leia began to save her own life by fighting for Tinas?

Leia began to save her own life by fighting for Tina’s because she is helping Tina feel safe, and by that she is gaining trust and becoming comfortable with Tina.

Chapter 12
1.What is shocking about Leia and Eve’s confrontation?

It is shocking that Leia is so honest with Eve. That’s a big step for her.
Chapter 13:
1. A great deal was uncovered in this chapter? Take a minute to list everything that was unveiled.

Leia and Brians mom may have something to do with the picture. 4 years since the parents die, and Leia doesn’t realize that. Leia would put a rose and light a candle at her mom’s grave. Leia thinks that her mom drove off the cliff.

2. Do you get the impression that Brian and Leia’s mother knew what their father was doing?

Yes she did.

3. Why do you think Michaels writes the novel ensuring the big issues are noted in a subtle and unclear manner?

Michaels writes the novel unclear because she wants us to understand and realize what is important that is occurring, also the unclear stuff isn’t important.

Chapter 14/15

1. Prediction: What do you think is going to happen to Leia now?

I think that Leia is going to get caught at the zoo.

2. What has Leia learned about who she is because of her connection to the elephants skin?

Leia learned about who she is because she realizes that her skin is like the elephants skin, and that she is stronger and a different person.

3. How does the final statement relate back to the comparison to the elephants; “Inside there’s Leia. Outside there’s me.”

The final statement relates back to the comparison to the elephants because she doesn’t feel herself. Her and the elephants relate to one another because they are both different on the inside then they are on the outside.

4. Why doesn’t Michaels ever mention Leia’s real name?

Michaels never mentions Leia’s real name because her name isn’t what matters, its who she is and what she does that is important.
